Automated and connected driving
Automated and connected driving (AVF) plays a major role in Berlin’s transportation research. In addition to many studies on organizational and legal issues, the research activities focus on tests in real traffic, especially in the Digital Urban Traffic Test Bed in the district of Berlin-Reinickendorf.

About the Test Bed
The Senate Department for the Environment, Transportation and Climate Protection (SenUVK) is responsible for the construction and further development of the test bed, which is consistently focusing on the expansion and modernization of the existing infrastructure. By integrating it into its municipal processes, the State of Berlin is also ensuring that the infrastructure available at the test site will continue to be operated beyond the end of the current project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). This digital test bed is thus also open to third-parties beyond the end of the current project. The State of Berlin expressly invites you to intensively research, develop and test the future of automated and connected driving in urban traffic here.

January 2022 – June 2024
In KIS’M, an AI-based system for connected mobility is being tested that meets the challenges of autonomous, driverless and on-demand operation in dynamically growing service areas. Particularly important are user-centered implementation, seamless networking in the future mobility system, and a socially accepted vision of the mobility of tomorrow.

January 2020 – June 2022
In SHUTTLES&CO, the self-updating of digital maps based on the perception of autonomous vehicles, the improvement of perception and prediction in automated and connected driving, and traffic control and traffic information based on V2X communication were investigated. The highly automated minibus known as the “See-Meile” was also on the road again in Alt-Tegel. The project was accompanied by intensive acceptance research.

The highly automated minibus known as the “See-Meile” ran from summer 2019 until January 2020 from the Alt-Tegel subway station in the direction of the Greenwichpromenate. Passengers could use the busses free of charge.
