Final presentation SAFARI

Library

On December 10, 2019, the SAFARI project consortium held its final presentation in the Great Hall of the Humboldt Library Berlin, close to the Digital Testbed Urban Transport. The project partners DCAITI, Fraunhofer FOKUS, Freie Universität Berlin, HELLA Aglaia Mobile Vision GmbH, IAV GmbH and the Berlin Senate Department presented the results of their 2.5 year research work on the topic of “Self-Updating Urban Map” as a starting point for administrative digitization, AVF and other services.

The visitors, such as the city councilor of the district Reinickendorf, Katrin Schultze-Berndt and representatives of the district office, the VLB, the BVG, the sponsor VDI/VDE, the VISS office, the DLR, the Beuth University, the EasyMile GmbH and others could convince themselves of the quality of the developed algorithms, procedures and deployed products through the presented evaluation results. Live demonstrations of object detection and change detection in the test vehicles while driving through the test field with partly autonomously driven routes formed the final highlight of this event.

SAFARI has been a journey! It led us from surrounding detection via video camera and laser scanner in research vehicles, to infrastructure expansion with 8 RSU installed, and 4 Small Cells on urban support structures to support communication in the test field, AI algorithms developed in the project to detect changes with processing and storage in the backend, to our goal of being able to update the urban basemap in an automated way.

The project partners say goodbye to all their supporters with great thanks! The SAFARI project is over. However, the work is just beginning and will continue with a lot of enthusiasm and backpacks full of ideas in the follow-up project Shuttles&Co. which will start in January 2020.
